control zone

control zone
A controlled airspace extending upward from the surface of the earth to a specified upper limit (ICAO). The lateral limits of a controlled zone extend to at least 5 NM (9.3 km) from the center of the associated aerodrome(s) in the directions from which approaches may be made. The lateral limits of a controlled zone encompass at least those portions of the airspace that are not within control areas containing the path of IFR (instrument flight rules) flights arriving at and departing from aerodromes to be used in IMC (instrument meteorological conditions). Control zones’ boundaries are shown as dotted lines on aeronautical charts.
